FUTURISM — An Interplanetary Guide to Futura

This project marked my first large-scale InDesign endeavor, designed to push the boundaries of typography, conceptual storytelling, and print production. FUTURISM serves as both a type specimen book and a visual journey, presenting Futura in a way that merges clean, geometric aesthetics with the mystique of space exploration.

Spanning fourteen meticulously designed 8” x 10” pages, the book showcases the various weights and styles of Futura, using them to represent planets within our solar system. Each font weight is carefully paired with planetary-inspired color schemes, reinforcing the futuristic and celestial theme while demonstrating the versatility of geometric sans-serif typography. The layout was crafted with a modernist approach, emphasizing grids, balance, and precision—a fitting tribute to a typeface that has long been associated with innovation, modernism, and the future.

Beyond design, print production played a crucial role in this project. The book was formatted for professional print production, incorporating die-cut elements to create an interactive reading experience, allowing users to reveal hidden details between pages. Spot gloss accents were applied strategically to enhance contrast and draw attention to key typographic elements, while a soft-touch laminate cover provides a sleek, tactile finish. Additionally, careful color management and prepress adjustments ensured that each hue translated accurately from digital to print, maintaining vibrancy and consistency across the entire book.

FUTURISM — An Interplanetary Guide to Futura is more than just a type specimen; it’s an exploration of typographic storytelling, print craftsmanship, and the intersection of design and conceptual thinking. Through this project, I refined my understanding of prepress workflows, material selection, and professional printing techniques, all while celebrating one of the most iconic typefaces of all time.
